COURSE DEVELOPMENT

I've instructed five undergraduate courses and two graduate courses in the online Master's program. Some of the courses I've taught include Foundations of Tourism, Diversity in RST, Communication in RST, and Strategic Management.

I've taught undergraduate and graduate online courses. Courses range in size from 5-750 students. As such my dissemination of learning material and student assessments vary to fit the course content. Proficient with: Blackboard2G (Compass), Moodle, and Canvas.

I employ Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and use scaffolding to ensure the curriculum mets all levels of Bloom’s taxonomy. I applied specialized research knowledge as well as generally applicable concepts. For some asynchronous course, I recorded lectures in professional studio and in at home settings.

PEDAGOGY

My pedagogical practices are grounded in culturally responsive teaching (CRT). This is an educational philosophy that understands students’ cultural backgrounds as a central factor in learning. I focused on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) which is the application of accessibility practices to provide equal learning opportunities through engagement, representation, action, and expression, and culturally responsive teaching. The ways I implement this varies but includes ensuring equitable access to learning materials, providing a variety of assessment opportunities (closed-book exams, group projects, and presentations), and ways to engage with the course materials (discussions, reflections, in-class activities).

SELECTED COURSES

COMMUNICATIONS IN RST

This course will introduce students to the theoretical approaches for effective communication strategies in their personal and professional communication. This course places particular emphasis on reflective thinking as it relates to communication strategies with recreation, sport, and tourism industries. Throughout the semester, we will address the demands of engaging in meaningful communication in a hyper-connected, media-saturated world. To do this, students will learn how to effectively plan and execute communication strategies within an RST organization. By understanding how to effectively communicate students taking this course will be equipped to better manage information dissemination, project management, and conflict resolution.

DIVERSITY IN RECREATION, SPORT, AND TOURISM

The course is designed to increase awareness and knowledge of the needs of members of ethnic and racial minorities, people of lower socio-economic status, older adults, and people with disabilities when it comes to recreation, sport, and tourism services. It introduces students to concepts and factors that influence the delivery of recreation, sport, and tourism services to diverse populations. The common thread throughout this course is the experience of a unique aspect of culture among non-dominant groups in the U.S. In this course, we explore how people’s multiple sources of identity and (dis)advantage intersect and interact with each other to affect their leisure experiences.

FOUNDATIONS OF TOURISM

This course addresses how the tourism industry functions as an interwoven network of industries (hospitality, service, attractions, and events). We go beyond the travelers’ perspective to consider what the tourism industry means for 1) people who work in tourism; 2) businesses operating in the tourism industry; 3) communities living in areas of tourism attention; 4) companies, cities, regions, and/or countries who want to attract, develop, and maintain tourism attention; and 5) policy makers who are responsible for creating laws and policy about the tourism industry in relationship to the rest of the world. This course was redeveloped in the summer of 2020 to address issues around:

  • Tourism and world health, with particular attention to the impacts of the 2019 novel coronavirus.

  • Tourism and the environment, with particular attention to sustainability and climate change.

  • Tourism and culture, with greater attention on non-Western cultures.

  • Tourism and society, with particular attention on the interconnectedness of travelers and communities and on the importance of developing sustainable tourism for host communities, people, and destinations.
